Who Cares’?

It was nice to kick off our journey into the PPU. I feel like we all took something away from the messages that were being given to us. I thank each of you for your time, patience and empathy as we went through the information about the careers gap. Could I ask each of you to provide me with feedback on the journey we took last week. What did you like about the journey? Was there anything that you didn’t […]

Sounds Like an Exquisite PPU Story

Sound is so critical and often underappreciated in media storytelling, but it’s often subtle- background sounds that provide a setting, the slam of a door or the gentle crunching of foot steps approaching a door. Today’s message is via audio, the typical recording of me speaking, but consider how you might even tell a story in sound with no dialogue (check out an activity in the Make Bank). View on Vocaroo >> I use a fun, free site for doing […]

Building Community Activities Online

As soon as I read the title to each of the reading for the week, ideas started to swirl around in my head.  I have always been a boy that, as Yoda put it, “Looked to the stars…never his mind on where he was.”  It’s true and it has served me well. Right after reading the titles and who authored the pieces I instantly set to writing down ideas.  I would love for one day, have all students in a […]

The Body in the Post-Pandemic University

A theme that is beginning to emerge in my contemplation of the material we are reading in NetNarr is Body. I realize the notion of Body is not a new one and there are many, many people before me that have fleshed this out. This framework of the Body started to come to me partly because I am reading The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Van Der Kolkfor my class on trauma and also after reading the article “Bodies […]

Unintentionally Inequitable Hybrid Instruction

“Intentionally Equitable Hospitality in Hybrid Video Dialogue: The context of virtually connecting” by Maha Bali, et al. describes how the VConnecting (Virtually Connecting) community facilitates “hybrid conversations” by livestreaming academic conferences for virtual participants who are unable to attend in person. By practicing “intentionally equitable hospitality,” the VConnecting community encourages historically marginalized and disenfranchised groups to contribute to academic conversations alongside “established scholars.”  I appreciate that Bali, et al. recognize that hospitality must be intentional. It’s easy to say that […]

Slice of Life: Documenting Opportunities (Pandemic Year)

(This is for the Slice of Life challenge, hosted by Two Writing Teachers. We write on Tuesdays about the small moments in the larger perspective … or is that the larger perspective in the smaller moments? You write, too.) It’s a year or so into the Pandemic, and it seemed like a good time to have my sixth graders reflect in writing on life in the Pandemic. I framed their responses as a Message in a Bottle (digital version) for Future Historians. […]

NetNarr: Then What?

I’m not completely sure what I am doing here, but Networked Narratives is designed on the reality that the Pandemic has changed learning at the University level. I followed the lead of some others in designing some art about this concept. It’s not that I think this disruption will completely dismantle higher education, but it is going to be impacted (as it already is) by technology and remote learning and more. That’s worth noting and thinking about, and the NetNarr […]

The Caring Gap!

Trailblazing forward! What a great way to kick off our pathfinder series with Ryan trail-blazing a critical topic for us as we took a deeper dive into the question of labour and care in teaching and learning. Thank you to Ryan for taking us to this complex and challenging place right “out the gate”. Here are the slides for our class agenda last week. It is a testament to @RyanMarlowe6 that he chose 2 center CARE as our inaugural #netnarr […]

Copy.ai and How to Teach a Bot to Be a Hater

Have I  mentioned that I am doing a research project along with my students for my advanced composition class.  They have their own projects while I have mine:  will AI replace composition instructors in the near term? The answer I see over and over is that it won’t replace them, it will augment them.  If you see that answer often enough, you begin to think it might just a collective “WRONG”!””!”. I certainly do. I decided to let the online […]

Connect in a Time of Disconnection

Virtual connection is definitely not the same as an in-person connection. So why would it be useful? Maybe for conferences with attendees that can’t physically attend…that would be the best reason right? But what about when the whole world gets caught up in a diseased and deadly storm, when gestures of love and intimacy are now a double-edged sword, when breathing freely in a crowded place can possibly be a death warrant? What then? Does virtual connection bring people together […]

Strength of Community

Going off the reading list in the semester (I’m hoping I got this right), I spent a bit of time going through Equity Unbound’s OneHE site. It’s an open educational resources page spearheaded by many different people (including Dr. Zamora!) I feel this was an appropriate and welcoming transition from last class’s theme of caring (or uncaring). It’s important to foster a welcome community of any sorts and provide them valuable tools to succeed, especially in this period of time […]

Caring Gap

This reading was a great way for us to begin our journey. It, in my opinion, was able to tackle some major concepts early and I know we are going to do a much deeper dive off of this and go on some welcome tangents in order for us to see exactly how these things effect us today, especially in the connected world we live in. The gap between carers and non carers was something that I never explicitly thought […]

A Daily [creative] Habit

There’s no shortage of ideas to take on as daily challenges. Anything we seek to be better at, from writing to fitness to mindfulness to creativity can be achieved through a regular personal practice. In middle school, I wanted to play the saxophone, maybe just because it was shiny and looked cool. I never practiced much after my first sessions at home had my dog howling and my sisters laughing. So I stopped. But one does learn to do things […]

Do You Really Care?

I immediately resonated with the opening paragraph of Gabriela Saldanha’s, “The Post Pandemic University and the Caring Gap.” As lockdown began, I can recall scrolling through my social media accounts only to continuously view others stating, “this is the time to find yourself,” “you have no excuse to not tackle the new hobby you’ve always wanted,” and “there are so many opportunities to still make money.” Perhaps, there was some truth to these statements for individuals like me, but Saldanha […]

Just Call Me Love-A-Lot!

You know, sometimes I really wonder exactly how I got to this point in my life, and the more I contemplate the answer, the more I realize that only potential reason is consistently true; I’m not just myself, but a synthesis of the best parts of the folks in my life, and the reason I got to absorb some of their best traits is because of a mutual care. (And in the case of Jamie, it’s because she’s the absolute […]
