History of Advertising Trust turns 50

Frogs in advertising flickr photo by NomadWarMachine shared under a Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) license Today’s TDC says The History of Advertising Trust is an archive of 50 years of British adverts. Visit and revel in video and audio commercials, print advertising and ghost signs (no idea what these are, me neither, but they sound intriguing!). Make some art based on what you find there – maybe a mashup image, a gif or a poem. Also see this Grauniad […]

Harebells

Harebells flickr photo by NomadWarMachine shared under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-SA 2.0) license Today’s TDC says I don’t know if you have ever read the old versions of fairy tales or not, but some of these familiar stories are pretty gruesome. Walt Disney became famous for taking these very old tales and sanitizing them for modern youngsters. One of my favorite examples comes from the tale of Cinderella when the prince comes looking for the owner of the lost slipper […]

Rain or shine, your city/town/burg is beautiful. Show us the magic

Today’s TDC says Celebrate the season wherever you live (Autumn in the northern Hemisphere, Spring in the southern) by getting out in the streets today and photographing the beauty that is the moment. If you’re housebound, turn your camera to the window. Compose your shot. Make it beautiful. It’s  very changeable weather here today – one minute bule sky, the next drizzly rain. Here’s my favourite orner of our garden, with Fair Flora (needing repainting!) in front of our ‘orchard […]

Anarchist calisthenics

Today’s TDC says A suggestion linked by Austin Kleon in his newsletter “Every day or so break some trivial law that makes no sense, even if it’s only jaywalking. Use your own head to judge whether a law is just or reasonable. That way, you’ll keep trim; and when the big day comes, you’ll be ready.” (Or, in the words of Wendell Berry, “Every day do something that won’t compute.”) What trivial law will you break today? Well, this is […]

What Have You Fixed Lately?

Leopard print jacket flickr photo by NomadWarMachine shared under a Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) license Today’s TDC says Show us a photo of something you recently fixed or made better. When my SiL was clearing out my MiL’s flat she came across a bag of knitting. Inside was a jacket, half finished. We both remembered it as a project we’d seen a few years ago, quietly cleared away. Shona asked if I’d like it, and I said I would. […]

Flat Earth

Today’s TDC says What do you think would happen if the earth was flat? Tell us, or show us. Be original! I immediately thought of what a cat would do … so here’s a pic of a cat, sitting on the earth, having pushed all the countries off onto the floor. Dictating to a baby elephant

Todays TDC says “Imagine how you might feel about your writing if instead of typing it on a computer or writing it longhand you were dictating it to a baby elephant holding a stylus in his trunk.” This provocation comes from Stephen Nachmanovitch Free Play: Improvisation in life and art, p37-8.  The suggestion is that inspiration comes straight from the heart, but sometimes needs to be explained or translated. Our Muse is the vehicle of that translation. What would you dictate […]

World Animal Day

Today’s TDC says 4th October is World Animal Day. Make some art to celebrate your favourite animal I decided to celebrate the puffin, so I headed over to Flickr and searched my images there. Here’s a picture I took in 2018 when we took a boat from Mull to Lunga. Puffin flickr photo by NomadWarMachine shared under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-SA 2.0) license I also put an arty filter over it Artified puffin flickr photo by NomadWarMachine shared under a […]

Paper plane

Today’s TDC says Make a paper plane and show it to us. Either make a photo of it, or film it in full flight (extra applause for a plane that flies well). Straight away I heard the Quo singing in my head, so I found it on YouTube (see bottom of post). Now, I know how to make a paper plane, but I wondered about making a fancy one. I found instructions from the Glasgow Science Centre and followed them […]

War Pigs

Today’s TDC says Audrey Watters‏ said, “repetition of the word ‘masses’ in the first 2 lines of Black Sabbath’s War Pigs is the most disappointing failure of imagination in the history of rhyme.” So let’s give Geezer some help. What else could he have used for the second line? Rhyme on. Well, actually I don’t mind the repetition – as it reminds me that there is more than one meaning of ‘masses’, but here goes. I tried a couple of […]

Canyon Groove

Today’s TDC says Canyon Groove is a site that allows you to create songs out of mountains, by imagining those lines as grooves in a vinyl record. The download button didn’t work for us but there is a share button. See what songs are singing in one of the mountains. I played around with the settinga and recorded my tune using the built in Windows snipping tool and uploaded it to Youtube – it’s a bit quiet, so apologies for […]
