Our Wrap Up!

So the time has come for us to synthesize our Post-Pandemic University dreams and nightmares in a brilliant collection of tiny tales. So much can be addressed with the power of a story, and so much can be laid bare with speculative fiction. Our collection of PPU tiny tales will be speculative-fiction-as-literature. Your micro- fictions will explore possibilities in a society which may not yet have been enacted, but are latent. Any technology or fantastical element in speculative fiction ought to have […]

Institutional responsibility & #againstsurveillance

Thanks to all of you for another thoughtful evening with excellent conversations, covering some heavy hitting issues for the post-pandemic university: proctoring technology and software, as well as the institutional role in ensuring equitable and just environments for higher education. Despite the open admittance that your collective hearts felt burdened on Thursday evening (and that you have considerable challenges on your plate – both medical and stress-related), you all “showed up” with a thoughtful engagement of this work. Thanks to […]

Thinking about race and technology in #NetNarr

As we delve deeper into the realm surveillance in the age of big data and algorithms, we also Connie to consider implications for the post-pandemic university. Here are the agenda slides from class last time we met. What a pleasure to kick off our #netnarr class time with a special Studio Visit conversation with scholar/researcher Chris Gilliard. He really opened up an understanding of what is at stake regarding surveillance technologies, and we were able to hear a bit more […]

Anticipatory Conformity & Algorithimic Bias

I am glad we have spent some time thinking about the everyday consequences of data surveillance, and I think that discussing the “Screening Surveillance” films has been a great way to get at the issues (moving beyond mere conceptual analysis) as we start to think about how this ubiquitous reality is shaping our everyday lives. The conversation we had about “A Model Employee” and more recently about “Blaxites” lead to some meaningful insights on your part. Doing some speculating together […]

Attention

Thanks to Sun for an insightful and interactive pathfinding session on the Attention Economy. And double thanks for choosing to use the digital interface tool called Miro which I have found to be very useful in current research collaboration, interactive workshops, and also editorial collaborations. You never know what you might be working on for your future thesis inquiry, and it is good to have this initial exposure to tools that might facilitate your own research vision. Here are the […]

The Internet’s Good, Bad, & Ugly

Thanks for another great evening of discussion and deliberation, and thanks to Kevin for opening up a broader discussion of the open web. By thinking through some of the issues that dana boyd brought to our attention in her On Being podcast, we started down our own #netnarr chat-path, with many loose stands of thought, revealing some of the significant challenges we face as we continue to navigate the world with the internet. Hybrid pug-bunny? I hope we can circle […]

Zoom Gazing & beyond

Thanks again to Autumm Caines for a fun and interactive Studio Visit wherein we considered the design implications of Zoom. In our “play” session, we explored some basic features (some that I had never really used before). I discovered that I feel vulnerable when I turn-off “view self” mode, and I also discovered that the majority of students do seem to want the instructor to have “camera-on”. (I suspected that, but it was good confirmation to receive, …no matter how […]

Snow Day Update

I am hope you all enjoyed a day off, and that the snow hasn’t created too much difficulty for you. It seems this winter has been the real thing, and I am glad we had a chance to slow down a bit. Next week I have been looking at our schedule, and for next week, we will proceed with the original plan.  For next Thursday Feb. 25, Jessie will present on Autumm Caines’ The Zoom Gaze. Real Life Magazine. https://reallifemag.com/the-zoom-gaze/. Our friend and colleague Autumm […]

IEH and Trauma-Informed Pedagogy

Thanks to Amber for trailblazing some important considerations as we continue to think about digital citizenship and education in the age of pandemic, and as we dream of a post-pandemic university that is transformed. Here are the agenda slides from our discussion on 2/11/21. Body (in teaching and learning) "Turning people into less then whole humans isn’t just an online problem or a problem of the pandemic. …(The) body isn’t a new theory and neither is the way dehumanizing is […]

The Caring Gap!

Trailblazing forward! What a great way to kick off our pathfinder series with Ryan trail-blazing a critical topic for us as we took a deeper dive into the question of labour and care in teaching and learning. Thank you to Ryan for taking us to this complex and challenging place right “out the gate”. Here are the slides for our class agenda last week. It is a testament to @RyanMarlowe6 that he chose 2 center CARE as our inaugural #netnarr […]

Setting a course…

We are off to a great start in #netnarr! I am glad we spent a bit of time setting the Course Calendar together. By now, we hav some clear themes and “pathfinding” directions set by each of you. Each selection you made will open up certain critical/urgent questions. the material will help point us towards collective reflections on the pandemic, and future of education as we dream of a post-pandemic context for learning. Pathfinding Please remember, being the “pathfinder-of-the-week” means […]

Launching our experiment!

Here is just a quick note this week to mention that it was “food for my soul” to see you all on Thursday evening, and to launch this 5th iteration of the collaboratory that has come to be known as #netnarr. You had a brief chance to catch up, and we made some new introductions as well. Prof. Levine & I welcome you to put on your creative thinking caps, and walk through the door of our “always open” lab. Welcome to “Net Mirror: The Post Pandemic University”

Welcome to the 5th edition of this experimental, exploratory and inventive course! At the onset of our time together I want to quote the formidable Nina Simone and say to you all that “it’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, and I am feeling good.” I share here the words of Amanda Gorman, whose call for hope, unity and resilience in a time of division, is just the right invocation for the #netnarr, 5th edition: There is change in […]

Week 10: Frayed

This week unraveled a bit. Chaos overtook order. Things are being righted. Courses corrected. Actions taken. Kean University students got an email on lieu of a blog post; but for the record, this is what they did this week. Bus Tour 4: Cairo, Egypt Our last stop in our “Bus Tour” will be was Thursday morning where we met with a class at American University Cairo taught by Maha Bali. We asked at both AUC and Kean University to think […]
