Are video games the problem?

Few things annoy me more than the "violent video games" argument, which has been volleyed back between Republicans and Democrats since the early 2000s. Although I do think that parents should moderate which games their children are playing, I don't think that running someone over in a car in Grand Theft Auto is a sign that a person is secretly a psychopath, and I certainly think that uninformed politicians should stop making it a talking point. It's hard to explain […]

NetNarr: Getting My Alchemy On

Each day, I continue to use the prompts from the Daily Arganee of Networked Narratives to write a short poem or piece as a creative exercise. I am more apt veer off-topic than to stay on-topic with the prompts, but I aim to go where the muse takes me. Periodically, I’ll go in and gather and curate them into a short video.  The one above is my recent collection. These down below are some of the past collections of the […]

yo tony, where’d u get that fresh pepperoni

phew! it's been a long week! and a pretty long checklist, too :P i kid, i kid!last tuesday was a bit of a technical mess, with our projector dying for good. but, the twitterchat still persisted, and i think we had a great conversation about empathy games - particularly SPENT, Bad News, and Syrian Journey. Our group played SPENT, which I also encountered last year in Networked Narratives. I remember doing infinitely better than I did this time around - […]

My Journey in Audio Making!

I would love to begin this blog with a WOOHOO I DID IT! I made my first audio track and I just felt like those producers that are out there making music. First off, I was extremely nervous leaving class last week due to the new assignment that was given to the class in our Netnarr class. We had a class of selfies, gifs, memes, and last week we had a class on audio making! Professor Levine introduced us to […]

Exploring Sound Waves of the World

This week has been an awesome and exciting week in exploring #netnarr and what it has to offer.  First, in class, we started with empathy games.  I was in the group that had to play Fake News, a game that allowed you to be in control of the fame news world and spark controversy on different social media platforms and news sites.  The sad truth about the game is that this happens more often than not.  Due to anyone with internet […]

Life As A Gamer

It was cool to play games and talk about gaming in class last week. I actually thought about letting my students play some of the games and asking them to think about games and the impact it has on their life. I never thought about games being used to give people empathy. Or rather to make them more empathetic. But I suppose games of this nature could have the same effect on people as they think that violent games have […]

Reteaching Teaching: Pedagogy and Teacher Training for the Digital Age

Digital media and networks, like blackboards and post-it notes, are tools whose effectiveness depends on how they are used. Whether you call it “connected learning” or a “new culture of learning,” deploying the tools depends on changing the mindset of educators. Connected learning elements are openly networked, interest powered, production centered, peer supported, shared purpose, academically oriented. Educators and trainers of educators are leading the way by experimenting with pedagogy that engages students by connecting their academic curriculum with their […]

Working with Audio???

I think I’m funny~ Anyway, this week we covered an almost confusing number of different subjects. So, please bear with me as I try to get wandering, wondering thoughts together ^.^ Empathy or Lack Thereof One of this week’s topics was that of “empathy games”. According to this article by Eric Bartelson, empathy games are ones that confront players with “real human issues…things like depression, bullying, terminal illness, or suicide”. Through playing these games and “experiencing” these issues “first-hand”, players, […]

#NetNarr: Hacking/Remixing the Game of Chess

A few years ago, for DS106, I was part of a group that did a collaborative radio project that centered on the art of remixing. My segment centered around an activity I do with my sixth grade students, remixing and hacking the game of chess to create something new altogether. It is part of our Game Design Unit. Here is the radio segment I did: Peace (hacked for greater good), Kevin PS — here is the entire Merry Hacksters Radio […]

Six Word Slice of Life: From Design Flow to Interactive Story

(For this month’s Slice of Life Challenge with Two Writing Teachers, I am aiming to do Six Word Slices most days, with some extended slices on other days.) Context: I wrote the other day about the ways my sixth graders were making design plans to create Interactive Fiction stories inside Google Slides. Since then, they have been working hard to bring the stories to fruition, and by yesterday, many were finishing up the writing and proofreading of their stories. I enjoy […]

#NetNarr: GameLoop GameSounds GameOver

This week, in Networked Narratives, the theme is on games and one of the challenges is to use audio to tell a story, and the audio should be game-themed. I decided to try to make a short song loop, with game sounds. No story except, there’s always a “game over” moment in a game. By the way, if you want to join me in annotating the video hangout session that the NetNarr folks and guests did on the topic of […]
