“Surveillance Capitalism”? Not on My Watch!!!

Photo by: https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/talkingtech/2017/03/10/webcam-security-cover-wikileaks-comey-zuckerberg/98953462/   An interesting topic (for me, at least) we covered this week on online digital spaces, was the darkness that inhabits the world of the web. This was one that mainly focused on “Surveillance Capitalism” and the possibilities of social sites to be spying on us all. It was scary to think of the idea that the government could be spying on us through our systems or devices. But it was scarier to think of the […]

Alchemy Everywhere Via Netnarr Transmogrification

So much alchemy here if, by alchemy, we mean transformation/translation. Daniel Bassill translated his own year in the form of a clock. Each hour represents a month. The tool he uses for his alchemical reflection on his year blogging is CMap. I transformed it in numerous ways below.   I am transforming his image into a short video, a viewer’s “cut”.     I made some notes on the back of the envelope he sent that held a thank you […]

Where Am I (And Where Am I Not?)

At the start of any course these days, I am always a lurker. I don't engage immediately because I need to read the ground rules, figure out what is going on and hopefully engage my brain before my mouth (or my fingers.) When I was younger I used to engage right away, without knowing the rules sometimes with very good results but not always. As with any medium where we are engaging with fellow learners, we're human, we make mistakes […]

Traveling with Turbulence

Have you ever had that feeling where you weren’t sure how you feel? Yeah, that’s where I’m at right now. This class was far from what I expected. I went in thinking it was a writing class prepared and ready to write, but to my surprise, it’s the total opposite. Not sure if I should be excited about this surprise. Right now I’m still trying to comprehend what exactly is going on, I mean I know I’m getting old, but […]

#netnarr Select, Click, ROT Magic

We have some fun in Networked Narratives with coded messages using rot13. Just look at the Daily Digital Alchemy 243: An encoded challenge today, what the ***** is “Pna lbh pbairefr va EBG13? Ner lbh pyhrq va?” That’s much more than an Alan typo… It’s just a simple cipher that works by changing each letter in a word to the one that is 13 letters after (wrapping around after Z). It’s nifty, because being half of the number of letters […]

back at it again with the owl refs

Or maybe not. I can only handle so many puns, guys, you’re gonna have to cut me a bit of slack. The year was 2017. The class, Networked Narratives. The blog, something I came up with at like 2 am that’s kind of my brand now. Or maybe it’s not. Kinda? Anyway, welcome to part two, the unexpected sequel. Real talk, I had no idea I’d registered for NetNarr again until I got the email 5 mins before class. SO […]

Who Knows What the Future Holds?

This is oddly intriguing and a bit unsettling. The video, shared in Networked Narratives, shows kids in 1966 chatting about what they envision as the future. So much of it was about Nuclear War, overpopulation, and the end of the world, and it’s sad to think how much was on the minds of these kids. Another article had drawings of ideas of kids imagining the future, taken from 1961. An artist rendered their ideas as illustrations. Here, mainframe computers were […]

Gaining A Greater Insight on Post-truth and Networks (Digital and Worldly)

Illustration by: http://thegovlab.org/proposal-1-for-icann-get-smart-with-expert-networks/   The topics of “post-truth” and “networks (digital and real-world networks)” were some interesting topics we covered in class this week. Perhaps, the main reason to why I found them interesting was because they were topics I’ve never dove deep into for analysis. Not surprisingly, I found them to be interesting and worth learning about. As I learned from class and by myself, post-truth is a real thing that is now part of the web in 2019. […]
