I Can’t Believe It’s Not Journalism!

“It’s like journalism–only better.” (pg. 6, slide 3) My Second Rodeo So….that Hobo Lobo of Hamelin is some story, right? Some great work of far-off, far-fetched fiction, right? Like, could you even imagine living in a world like that???? Wild, right? I’m dying Wild. Help. Alright, alright. Enough thinly veiled references to the blazing “hugest” dumpster fire politics in the greatest country in the world have become. However cathartic it may be….  I’m ready for Ashton Kutcher to pop out and reveal America’s been punked. I remember […]

Voyage Forward

Discovering what electronic literature is capable of is truly riveting. Discussing the experience and thoughts of others about reading, or rather navigating, through a work of electronic literature in the class made a lot of things more clear to understand. I totally agree with the assertion that “when we are schooled, we loose our ability to make games out of life” and that “electronic literature is one way to bring that sense of fun back around”. Best example of this […]

Miscommunication

Random moments of misconnection: George, a Chinese UG, tells me how hard it is to study independently when there is so much he does not understand in lectures. He struggles to understand aurally and finds it hard to use lecture notes to find out what he missed because he … does not know what he missed. We talk about strategies, I suggest some support networks. I tell him not to struggle alone. Later that day some of us struggle in […]

Viva La…Russian Revolution???: Analyzing Neo-Futurism & The Mutability of Reality and Story in Illya Szilak’s Reconstructing Mayakovsky

Здравствуйте~ Reality remains fatal, a bullet in the brain ~ In the names of progress and peace, what would you sacrifice? Some of your freedoms? Most of your voice? All of your body? Replace your autonomy with technology, swap democracy for technocracy? These questions seem to be at the narrative heart of Illya Szilak’s Reconstructing Mayakovsky (2008), a work of Eliterature (ELit) heavily inspired by the rise of both terrorist activity and technological advancement in the early 21st century as well […]

Diving Back In

“‘…there is no story at all; there are only readings’ (124)”. I don’t know why WordPress is throwing my links all over the page like this. I had to cut a bunch of links to make the post remotely legible. I’ve tried many different things to fix the problem and I think it’s just a system error for the time being. Believe me, I’m annoyed about it too >.> Flux & Flow So…. I’m back at it again. Doing the ELit […]

The First Step

It is exciting to write my first blog post for the semester. A digital means of writing for a digital-focused class. I was not fully aware of electronic literature or its impact in the field up until now but it appears to be more fascinating than one would expect. It is simply described as “literature born in digital form” and exclusive to that digital-based environment. Even though it sounds clear enough, it certainly requires more thought to fully grasp its […]

Diving Back In~

“‘…there is no story at all; there are only readings’ (124)”. Flux & Flow So…. I’m back at it again. Doing the ELit thing, writing the feelings whatever those are down, being “insightful”… You know, the usual. Anyway, let’s get down to business. I don’t remember what I thought of Jessica Pressman’s “Navigating Electronic Literature” the first time I read it eons and eons ago but this time around, I found it to be thought-provoking, informative, and intellectually engaging. The article articulates […]

Reclaiming Lurking

Lurking is a potential problem for theories of social constructivism and principles of active learning. It’s also a problem for data analytics – if the student is not VISIBLE, how do we KNOW that they are learning? The invisible are easy to ignore, easy to problemetise, easy to marginalise, easy to other, easy to shame. It is tempting to chivvy them into participation, but participation without intrinsic engagement and motivation is futile, is facile, is inauthentic. A pedagogic approach that […]

The #SelfieUnselfie Project

Selfies have become the cultural artifacts of our time, a digital mosaic of the diversity of our online lives. And while some say selfies are a mark of a deeply narcissistic culture, others say selfies are a new version of the old idea of the self-portrait. Some understand the selfie as an important means of self-expression and an affirmation of self-love. Selfies have also become a key component of a person’s “personal brand.” But whatever your take on selfie-culture, there […]
