Alchemist Blog Week 7

GIFs however you pronounce them (gif, gif, I   choose simply to spell the phrase out in conversation, because its such a controversial topic) are, next to memes, the funniest internet phenomenon. Its more than a meme, but less than a video, creating the perfect medium to engage an attention span that may be shorter than most (like mine). GIFs are fun, to make and easy to communicate. They provide a little more context than a meme may and create […]

#NetNarr: Patent Entertainment With Animated GIFS

Original Patent: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/16972882 The folks over at Today’s Document surprise me now and then when they slip an animated gif into their RSS feed, usually in the form of an item about one of the patents in the Library of Congress. (They also will regularly convert video archive moments into animated gifs, but I find these illustration remixes to be the best to enjoy). Original Patent: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/6277655 I’m always fascinated by the old drawings in the patent applications, so the […]

Selfie Time!

What an interesting class I have. In Netnarr we spoke about selfie and learned the history of it. Yes, the name selfie was just introduced to the public a couple of years ago, but the actual picture where you see the face of a person and the background behind them have existed centuries ago. In the Selfie History video, it shows how even people who did not have color in picture yet, still took selfies with their big cameras. I […]

On GIFS

You know what was really swell as all hell back in the day? When watching the Harry Potter movies and seeing the moving photos in the foreground. That seemed like something only possible through magic at the time…..and CGI. Turns out, those types of pictures aren’t just fantasy…..they were probably just GIFs. https://m.imgur.com/gallery/rE6W8P6 I made a variant of this a while back. Still as shibe as ever. I find GIFs quite interesting for several reasons, but the primary one is […]

Make Bank: Photograph a Process

For this make, I am submitting a process that is fun, frustrating, and something I am learning day by day. I love having my nails done, but going to a salon every two to three weeks can be quite expensive. It's also a time commitment of about two hours, which is usually more than I can spare. So, about two years ago I decided to learn to do my own gel overlay. I bought all of the supplies: gel, tools, […]

the GIFt that keeps on GIFing

i'll be honest - i thought GIFs merely existed to serve as reactions and responses on social media (in particular, more than just cats making funny faces). i never really thought about them outside of their purpose for humor, nor did i think of them as anything merely than just a loop of a person/animal/object doing something. i would've never put the words "art" and "GIF" in the same sentence, or realize that even a loading bar is technically a […]

GIF it up!

Last week was a nice break, although I'm glad we had time to talk about GIFs which, next to memes, are my favorite subject. I love using GIFs in conversations with friends, and often joke that lately, these two are personal favorites:Honestly, when isn't there a use for hell Elmo? As for the drinking bleach meme, maybe you have to know my friends, but they send some crazy stuff to our group chats. It's cool to me that GIFs are also […]

#NetNarr: Getting a Bit Crazy, Making GIFS

Over at Networked Narratives, the theme is now shifted into GIFs, and all the wacky things you can do with them. Alan’s assignment calls for a GIF storm of sorts in the #NetNarr hashtag, including GIFs that connect with the Digital Life underpinning and finding narrative points in the clip from the Western movie The Big Country to pull out as animated moments. So … First, I went in to the clip and found the dramatic scene where the rider […]

GIF, GIF, GIF and more GIF

These last couple weeks have centered on making memes and GIFs. So fun! I found GIFs a lot more fun then memes because with GIFs you can make small moving clips. You can choose any part of a video, movie, tv show, etc and edit out the parts that you want to use. I also like the fact that GIFs are a form of communication. Sometimes when I text my friends, we tend to talk just through GIFs. There are […]

#NetNarr Discovery: Lost In Hyperland (A Fantasy Documentary)

Hypermedia flickr photo by Dominik W. Neuffer shared under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-SA) license Thanks to some sharing of an article by Wendy in Networked Narratives a few weeks ago, I stumbled on this 1990 film about where hypertext might be going, with novelist Douglas Adams. The Internet Archive site explains a bit more about Hyperland: In this one-hour documentary produced by the BBC in 1990, Douglas falls asleep in front of a television and dreams about future time when […]

My Gifs to You~

Despite this week’s many technical difficulties on campus, this is not what actually happened though I thought about it…. Myself along with the rest of the goody-2-shoes class that showed up this week did stay for a crash course in gifs and their creation~ The Gif of Gifs (Okay, I’m done) This week we explored the animated gif. Though we didn’t spend much time discussing the creative form in the classroom, we did watch a short clip of a movie that is […]
