Prepping for the final

I’m going to enjoy the concept of the final project, having to write a short-written piece based on the overall theme we’ve been following all semester. We have the guidelines, the parameters, the theming (technology in an academic setting), and the allotted time to do so. It’s been a long time since I’ve written anything creative, I’ve had to put that aside as I’ve worked on other pursuits of life. I am happy to say that coming back to this […]

Introversion amidst Lockdown

For the final week, I wanted to set my focus on the effect of COVID-19 on introverts, as I feel I relate to this topic the most. To do so, I spent some time focused on reading For introverts, the COVID-19 lockdown has an upside. “Could the online teaching and learning space be the buffer that introverted students needed in order to quietly get on with the job?” That question stuck out to me the most as I’ve read through. […]

Against Surveillance

For next week’s class, I’ve looked into and will try and present information regarding students fighting back against surveillance apps in their classes. I knew a bit of what went into these programs, but I also found myself falling down a rabbit hole learning about what more is there. Most of what I found is alarming, and something that shouldn’t be a thing when it is something that is benefitting virtual schools in a time where we really need it. […]

Power Balance

Ruha Benjamin’s Catching Our Breath: Critical Race STS and the Carceral Imagination does an excellent job in discussing the many racial inequalities that can coexist with developing technologies. It was a point that was brought up before with AI face-scanning and criminal record analysis, but this particular argument is framed around the “proliferation and intensification of carceral approaches to governing human life.” One quote that caught my attention was by Everett Hughes, who asked “Why didn’t sociologists foresee the explosion […]

Coded Gazes

I’ve watched both video for next week’s discussion on Artificial Intelligence, Race & Technology, and there is a lot to unpack and discuss for next class. We’ve already made mention of the bizarre growth technology has on what we can do and operate, and it’s showing signs of not stopping. I think as a society we’ve gone far enough that the rate of growth is too far ahead, and at a rapid pace that we cannot properly regulate, I’ve made […]

Another Statistic

Once I came out of Shoshana Zuboff’s Big other: surveillance capitalism and the prospects of an information civilization, I started to piece together all that I know about online surveillance and connected it with so many other readings we’ve done this semester. I’m happy to say that I’m starting to understand where everything fits into the bigger (uglier) picture). Surveillance in an online space has been discussed heavily in our semester. What started off as tools that could have helped […]

The World We Live In Now

Having just watched We’re building a dystopia just to make people click on ads, I came away with it with assumptions reinforced and a rather disdain look towards our future in this direction society is going. I’m not trying to sound negative or upset for the sake of it or because it’s popular, but rather I understood how much technology has been advancing for causes that could be much better but instead is being used for profit. If that isn’t […]

Digital Archives

(I’m hoping I got this right) This week’s reading is Seeing Ourselves Through Technology: How We Use Selfies, Blogs, and Wearable Devices to See and Shape Ourselves, specifically chapter 4. In this chapter, author Jill Walker Rettberg discusses the concept of digital archives, how our phones and technology have gotten so advanced enough to the point where the act of preserving something can be automated. In a way, as I’ve stated before, the identities of a person is now blurring […]

Seriously Tired

For this week, we’re asked to think more critically on the effect Zoom has on the immediate level and the kinds of ramifications it can have long-term for everyday life. To facilitate thoughts and discussion, I’ve read The Zoom Gaze by Autumm Caines and Why We’re Exhausted by Zoom by Susan D. Blum. To put it bluntly, I’m tired. Not out of boredom, but of direct points made by both authors. We cannot deny the effect Zoom has had in […]

Digital Wellbeing

To start off with, I wanted to share a brief audio story I made at the direction of Professor Alan. We were challenged to write an audio story of our position in relation to class. I’m starting with this first as I feel it will leave a fitting impression to my thoughts this week: [vocaroo id="15YdTSTvvUIi"] https://voca.ro/15YdTSTvvUIi Second, I had listened to Dana Boyd’s podcast The Internet of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. It was an interesting segment […]

Strength of Community

Going off the reading list in the semester (I’m hoping I got this right), I spent a bit of time going through Equity Unbound’s OneHE site. It’s an open educational resources page spearheaded by many different people (including Dr. Zamora!) I feel this was an appropriate and welcoming transition from last class’s theme of caring (or uncaring). It’s important to foster a welcome community of any sorts and provide them valuable tools to succeed, especially in this period of time […]

Reactions and (W)ritings

So for this week, I’m structuring my blog posts in two halves. The first will be a reaction to reading this week’s reading, and the second I will be sharing a few of my writings based on our pertaining to short writing. To start off with, I enjoyed the information The Post-Pandemic University and the Caring Gap. Of all of the readings so far in this graduate program, this is definitely the most current one as it discusses the lack […]

First Big Leap into the Unknown

Connections by Hugo Gatica, serigraph print 2020 Stepping into a world of written media is not new to me. I’ve dedicated a large part of my life being buried under heaps of words, idioms, metaphors, sentences and the like. It’s the reason why I chose to to pursue a degree in writing, in addition to a visual arts one. I try and see artistic value in many aspects of life as I can, so my journey as an artist is […]
