Uncle Rogers by Judy Malloy is an interesting hypertext piece. It is similar to a couple of other literary works we have examined in the class in terms of its format. The narration is non-linear and the reader is required to put everything together to follow the story. It has that puzzle-solving aspect that gives it a playful tone. Its easy-to-follow style of writing makes this certain aspect much more fun to play with, especially in comparison to those other […]
There are many stories in the Valley Judy Malloy’s Uncle Roger is a work of hypertext fiction that explores the nature of love, relationships, family, business, class, and, ultimately, storytelling in a disjointed but compellingly, collage-like way. Uncle Roger consists of three different story files, A Party in Woodside, The Blue Notebook, and Terminals. This small collection of storie revolves around the early days of the Silicon Valley tech industry and people involved in the burgeoning industry. For this review, I explored A Party in Woodside. This story file is […]
My granny loved the colours of the sky at sunrise and sunset. Once, when redecorating, she opted for blue, grey and terracotta. “Like the colour of the evening sky”, she told me. Often when I see the autumn skies I remember her. This was the view from campus at 8am this morning
Meditating on Moving Ingrid Ankerson and Megan Sapnar’s Cruising is a compelling work of kinetic poetry that explores themes of love and youth and whose actual design reinforces its exploration of “temporal and spatial themes”. This work is made using Flash and it combines still images with linear, moving text. The speed of the text, and thus the speed of navigating this piece, is determined by the user’s cursor placement and movement. Users are tasked with finding a “balance” that allows […]
Man, my room looks a lot different than I remember. There seems to be a few nests scattered around my desk and bookshelf. Is that a giant landline phone in the corner? I thought I had a tiny cellphone… Oh, well. Let me call my lawyer real quick. I wonder if the case involving the wild bear going smoothly. What the… the floor is full of sand. Where are my slippers? I’m sure I hid them inside the microwave… which […]
Shocking In Daniel Merlin Goodbrey’s Icarus Needs, users get to go on a “hypercomic adventure” as they try to wake up “everyone’s favorite mentally unhinged cartoonist, Icarus Creeps”. The premise of this work is that Icarus fell asleep while playing video games and has somehow ended up in a surreal, cartoon-esque dreamscape ruled by a squirrel king??? Icarus needs to find a way out of this nightmare while rescuing his girlfriend, Kit, and defeating a very squirrely squirrel king. Users play as […]
I’m behind with #NovDoodle (or, taking it at my own pace!), and did the day 10 “glowing” yesterday. Above is the end result. First I drew a silhouette of an owl with white crayon on black paper and cut it out. Then I looked around my room for suitable light to shine through it. None of my regular lights looked quite right. However, amongst my many Doctor Who possessions is a Tardis light. Not perfect, but I like it.
Socks, yes socks! Sarah is a great knitter and Wendy responded to her call out and the results are so cool! Sarah’s wrote about this project but let’s get some more details on the design. Fibonacci? This video inspired some thinking. If the Fibonacci sequence can be incorporated into music then maybe it would be a cool sock design! The swirl is deceptively simple but needed some work to go onto the graph paper. This number sequence makes a swirl […]
“Dada Dada Dada, a roaring of tense colors, and interlacing of opposites and of all contradictions, grotesques, inconsistencies: LIFE.” ~ Tristan Tzara Uncovering the Story The story I want to tell is one I’ve been assembling the pieces of for a while now. Ever since my first interactions with ELit, specifically with works by Jason Nelson, Juliet Davis, and Porpentine, I feel like there has been this story developing. Between then and now, that tale has existed in a kind of in […]
