They are Watching & Listening

In the TED talk entitled We’re Building a Dystopia Just to Make People Click on Ads, Zeynep Tufekci uses her expertise as a techno-sociologist to elaborate how the use of Artificial Intelligence by different social media platforms has changed drastically over time. Tufekci demonstrates how this change in personalized A.I also implies greater risks and more serious consequences for the users. Tufekci provides a clear and informative discussion about A.I and how our simple, regular actions on the internet can […]

Persuasion, Politics, and the Post Pandemic University

In my past couple of blog posts, I’ve mentioned how data collection and a lack of privacy are looming concerns that I try not to think too hard about while I’m using the internet for work, school, and entertainment. I haven’t really been able to articulate exactly why the thought of companies collecting my data upsets me—obviously, I want to keep some parts of myself private, but there’s more to it than that. Zeyneb Tufeki’s TED Talk “We Are Building […]

Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben

I have to confess that I did my very best to control my ire doing many parts of the presentations for this week’s discussion.  First, if we start talking about what the future will be like while describing children as, “whiney little humans,” it is borderline counterproductive.  Those “whiney little humans” Ms. Tufeki spoke of will one day be running, programming and controlling the software she speaks about in the piece.  So, from my perspective, insulting the group that will […]

I’m going to get baking ads now, aren’t I?

When I encounter a new topic that I have no foundational information about, I start to feel the sensation of panic that arises from *gasp* not being knowledgeable about something. This is a deep insecurity that I mask with baking and researching in a chaotic fashion that usually leads to more questions than answers. Yet out of the swirl of chaos and carbs, a technique of learning has emerged that seems to be mellowing with age – whether it […]

Artificial Intelligence Is Making Us Artificial

For this week, instead of an article, I am going to focus on a Ted Talk. A Ted Talk spoken by Zeynep Tufkeci, a speaker who highlights the unfortunate events of modern-day society as a result of artificial intelligence. It is not creating havoc within the human world, but it is making a dystopia out of what could be a utopia. The world was always messy, but now the exposure is at a whole other level. With the help of […]

The Internet’s Good, Bad, & Ugly

Thanks for another great evening of discussion and deliberation, and thanks to Kevin for opening up a broader discussion of the open web. By thinking through some of the issues that dana boyd brought to our attention in her On Being podcast, we started down our own #netnarr chat-path, with many loose stands of thought, revealing some of the significant challenges we face as we continue to navigate the world with the internet. Hybrid pug-bunny? I hope we can circle […]

The World We Live In Now

Having just watched We’re building a dystopia just to make people click on ads, I came away with it with assumptions reinforced and a rather disdain look towards our future in this direction society is going. I’m not trying to sound negative or upset for the sake of it or because it’s popular, but rather I understood how much technology has been advancing for causes that could be much better but instead is being used for profit. If that isn’t […]

Being Watched While Being a Queen

Daily Creates  “You’re turning into a chess piece. Which one will you become? Show us an intermediate stage of your change process.” This is why I enjoy the daily creates. It gets my mind off of the stressful tasks in my life and allows me to have fun, random thoughts! To answer the question, I would most definitely be the Queen. High in status. The pictures representing me as Queen would most likely be my 2010 pageant of my 2016 […]

The Good, Bad and the Ugly

This week I am presenting the “On Being” podcast hosted by Krista Tippett.  Her guest in this particular episode was Danah Boyd, with the tagline “The internet of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.”  I am so glad that I chose to present this work because I feel like there is so much that can be done with it.  I think because they covered so much, there are so many insightful discussions that we can have that I envision […]

Getting In to Get Out, Getting Out to Get In

To those who know me, have met me virtually, or have seen me on Twitter or somewhere else on the ‘net, you know I’m not always the best at curbing my enthusiasm, keeping a consistent facial expression, or staying in one spot. Hyperactivity has always been central to who I am as a person; it’s what gets me through everything I need to do and get done and then some! Back in the day, my parents used to joke that […]

My Disappointment with the Discussion of Digital Diaries

I have to be honest; I wasn’t a fan of Chapter Four: “Automated Diaries” in Jill Walker Rettberg’s Seeing Ourselves Through Technology: How We Use Selfies, Blogs and Wearable Devices to See and Shape Ourselves. There are a lot of scary, uncomfortable realities that come with writing “digital diaries”—like privacy concerns and data collection—but in this article, Rettberg doesn’t explore any of those pressing issues. Instead, she spends pages tediously reviewing obsolete “lifelogging” apps by sharing the apps’ taglines and […]

I See Me

Chapter four, “Automated Diaries” in Rettberg’s Seeing Ourselves Through Technology, explores and discusses: how our technological devices keep track of nearly all of our information and store them, how do the apps manage to raise our attention by the specific way they represent our “stored data” to us and,How do these devices and apps affect and filter our lives, for a brief summary.  While this chapter of Rettberg’s is more in the direction of an informative speech/essay, she describes and discusses […]

Gazed & Confused

The best element of this article is the term it comes out with in what is becoming a rapidly increasing tradition of giving a human-like treatment to technological tools. Despite that the argument appears the exact opposite to this, it is rather intriguing that the author decides to defend human interaction by anthropomorphizing a computer program and giving it among all other human qualities the one of gaze. The primordial discussion of the author revolves around how the users see […]
