Whisper into the future

In this week in the Net Mirror (#NetNarr) Professor Levine is encouraging the use of audio to capture our thoughts.  Here I'm playing with audio and using the screen capture feature on Android (Samsung 10) that allows for multiple things: capturing my voice, capturing system sounds, screen annotation, video thumbnail.  This would be a very cool way to tell a story using a multimodal approach. This is a cross posting for #WalkMyWorld where I came across the "I Miss My Bar" […]

Slice of Life: Documenting Opportunities (Pandemic Year)

(This is for the Slice of Life challenge, hosted by Two Writing Teachers. We write on Tuesdays about the small moments in the larger perspective … or is that the larger perspective in the smaller moments? You write, too.) It’s a year or so into the Pandemic, and it seemed like a good time to have my sixth graders reflect in writing on life in the Pandemic. I framed their responses as a Message in a Bottle (digital version) for Future Historians. […]

NetNarr: Then What?

I’m not completely sure what I am doing here, but Networked Narratives is designed on the reality that the Pandemic has changed learning at the University level. I followed the lead of some others in designing some art about this concept. It’s not that I think this disruption will completely dismantle higher education, but it is going to be impacted (as it already is) by technology and remote learning and more. That’s worth noting and thinking about, and the NetNarr […]

Copy.ai and How to Teach a Bot to Be a Hater

Have I  mentioned that I am doing a research project along with my students for my advanced composition class.  They have their own projects while I have mine:  will AI replace composition instructors in the near term? The answer I see over and over is that it won’t replace them, it will augment them.  If you see that answer often enough, you begin to think it might just a collective “WRONG”!””!”. I certainly do. I decided to let the online […]

Strength of Community

Going off the reading list in the semester (I’m hoping I got this right), I spent a bit of time going through Equity Unbound’s OneHE site. It’s an open educational resources page spearheaded by many different people (including Dr. Zamora!) I feel this was an appropriate and welcoming transition from last class’s theme of caring (or uncaring). It’s important to foster a welcome community of any sorts and provide them valuable tools to succeed, especially in this period of time […]

Using a Bot to Write a 55-Word Story

I am writing a 55-word short story alongside my English 200, Intro to Lit class.  I have laid out the criteria for the assignment, but it is often difficult to get those who can’t imagine being creative writers to… write creatively.  In my research project for my E300 class I am exploring this question: will “mighty scary AI” replace composition instructors at the college level?  Something I have been using to find keywords is super Chrome extension, Keywords Everywhere. I […]

What I learnt from The Boss (and the band)

In Week 1 (and a bit) of Network Narratives there have been two questions for me:1. How can education be subverted?2. What do I think about this course theme: Post Pandemic University (PPU)These are extracted from the facilitators introduction and not asked directly. With another open participant, Terry Elliott (@telliowkuwp), we have been discussing these questions via the margins using hypothes.is. Terry suggested that the answer to question one might be GameStop. I'll leave that right there!Terry suggested The Boss, […]

Dead Professors Society

I was a tad skeptical when I saw the tweets being reshared from a student who was (rightfully if true) upset that his university was having dead professors teach classes. It was the macabre right out of a Netflix series idea of the Teaching Dead but then it is amplified by this Slate story, How a Dead Professor Is Teaching a University Art History ClassThe fact that the dead can literally replace living faculty members is a perfect metaphor for […]

Post-what?

NetNarr kicks off again and Alan Levine writes this introduction and Mia Zamora adds her launch thoughts. The theme this year is Imagining a Post Pandemic University. Working with students who are not-post but in-pandemic, it will be interesting what will be written in this environment. Mia talks about envisaging a 'way out' and all the paths that might move forward in the education sector. Play and fun is a prime focus and discovery with opportunities to express ourselves in different media.I'm […]

Old Paths, Newly Revisited: NetNarr and WalkMyWorld

I am dipping my toes into new iterations of two projects that I have participated in as “open participant” in the past — Networked Narratives: Net Mirror (with Mia and Alan) and Walk My World: 2021 (with Ian). Like some others (such as my friend and collaborator, Wendy), I might tangle the two together, bundling my learning and explorations across platforms and networks and learning programs. Both NetNarr and Walk My World are situated primarily in college classrooms, at the […]

First Big Leap into the Unknown

Connections by Hugo Gatica, serigraph print 2020 Stepping into a world of written media is not new to me. I’ve dedicated a large part of my life being buried under heaps of words, idioms, metaphors, sentences and the like. It’s the reason why I chose to to pursue a degree in writing, in addition to a visual arts one. I try and see artistic value in many aspects of life as I can, so my journey as an artist is […]

#NetNarr Season 4: Net Mirror Post Script

Oops. Speaking of slacking on the blogging, the last post here on this year’s Networked Narratives class was the first one about this year’s class. Net Mirror is the New #NetNarr This fourth iteration of this change it up every year course co-taught with Mia Zamora at Kean University mixed things up from previous years. More on that soon. From the start, the theme/metaphor is a 100% rip off (done with total respect, natch) of Black Mirror. And what we […]

Glitch, Remix, a #NetNarr Exquisite Corpse

There you go, try guess the nature of this blog post from a word heavy vague title. Better yet, just go first and try the thing I will be ‘splaining right here. Well, are you back? Did anything happen? Because one of our students in class (she too a teacher) asked as well as my twitter dog pal I hope you will write about how you set that up in Glitch (does it require an Airtable account? What’s Airtable?) You […]
