Does T-Mobile Redline Newark, NJ?

This class was interesting because we discussed an unfamiliar concept: redlining. Redlining is the practice of marking an area to call it out, usually as a place to avoid. The concept was introduced with a discussion of undesirable neighborhoods, and we were shown a redlined map of Newark, NJ from 1939. I was interested to learn that even in 1939, areas in Newark were considered undesirable places to live, and I would love to understand why in more depth. From […]

Red-Onlining

In class last week we learned about the concept of digital redlining (see Dr. Chris Gilliard’s work on the topic), and we were asked to create an interactive map of Newark that compared its historical redlining zones and something tech-related.  I chose to compare the redlining zones with free Wi-fi points, and my interactive map can be found here. It was hard to draw any meaningful conclusions from my map comparison because it seems there aren’t many free Wi-Fi points […]

Divided by Redline

The person that I had the questions for didn’t respond but my audio will be recorded down below.  Clean water game This week we learned about Redlining.. Redlining is the practice of denying services, either directly or through selectively raising prices, to residents of certain areas based on the racial or ethnic composition of those areas. What I choose to observe through my redlining observation was the phone company that has cell towers available in my area . It really puzzles […]

Getting Lost In Gaming

It’s been a hectic few weeks for me and playing catch up is stressful but I’m almost there. This week I wasn’t able to make it to class because I had some personal things that came up. So when it comes down to the discussion of game play types and the elements of games I am a little on the confused. But from trying to understand the post of this week 10 weekly break down for what was done in […]

Gaming Narrative !

Here is the gaming narrative I worked on.  Last week in my weekly Egypt mentioned how wwe posted questions to the student in the egypt class, working ontheir gaming idea project.  We asked questions and hped to get a response.  Due to the students being on their spring break, I did not get the opportunity to get the questions answered, but in this “podcast” type of narrative I explained why I chose this game idea to look at, and how I […]

Upon Reflection, Part Three: Creating a Virtual Gallery of Digital Art

As I write this, a week after launching the Alchemy Lab of Digital Objects, I am looking at stats for the immersive space. The space has been visited nearly 300 times and objects within the lab itself have been “clicks/viewed” nearly 700 times. Not everything worth writing about is data-driven, but at least, the numbers show us that people are giving the Lab a look, which is satisfying. The other day, I posted the first of a series of reflections […]

Gaming the System

*Much less fun than it sounds~ Painting the Town Red This week, we talked about redlining–basically denying services either directly or indirectly to residents in certain areas of a city or town based upon the ethnic makeup of the residents. More specifically, we talked about the idea of digital redlining and how online algorithms can play a part in the contemporary implementation of redlining practices. In order to learn more about digital redlining and how it works, we watched a […]

Redlining and Audio Making pt 2;Week 11 Blog

For this week, the class of Netnarr seemed more complete then last class. The in class assignment was very tricky especially for the undergrad. In my experience, I was completely lost in what to do and how to do it. I am very grateful towards the grad students for stepping out of their way like always and helping us out.  We started the class of by watching video in redlining which is refusing loan or  insurance to someone in a […]

Loveday

Spring is coming, finally. It’s been a hard winter and I think the blooms are 2-3 weeks later than last year, but looking out at my garden I see an explosion of forsythia blooms, and our narcissi and daffodils are cheerfully poking up under our fruit trees. Last October, when I was down for one sister’s 50th birthday, my youngest sister and her daughter gave me a pack of Cornish daffodil buds called “Loveday”. I don’t mention this much, but […]

Upon Reflection, Part Two: Creating a Virtual Gallery of Digital Art

Yesterday, I posted the first of a few reflections on the collaboration and thinking, and making, that went into the building of the online NetNarr Alchemy Lab of Digital Objects. This post is the follow-up, with more reflections on things that seemed to work and things didn’t seem to work (as well as I would have liked). One more post tomorrow will look at potential next steps and following up with the Alchemy Lab experience. Visit the NetNarr Alchemy Lab […]

Mapping Things Out (Redlining)

This week we looked into digital redlining, and even looked into how a few game board maps were designed to replicate certain cities or countries.  I chose to look specifically at the pokemon game board. I looked at it specifically in Newark, because this is a major area near my school.   It also has a good overlapping pattern to follow, which we would later use when have to match up this map, with the ma of Newark, NJ. Using the website H5P […]

Upon Reflection, Part One: Creating a Virtual Gallery of Digital Art

Ideas and Inspirations This all began when I had a crazy, inspired thought that I decided not to keep to myself (because how much fun would that be?): What if the (open and university) folks dabbling in Networked Narratives together created a collaborative piece of transmedia artwork together? I had recently been thinking more about transmedia storytelling — about how to try to tell a story that unfolds across different digital media and mediums, each piece with the ability to […]

Technology as Art/ Art as Technology

Will, drop my brass panties – you feel my text up flickr photo by LastHuckleBerry shared under a Creative Commons (BY-SA) license “… we can try out completely different ways of (art) expression.” — Douglas Eck. Douglas Eck – Transforming Technology into Art In another video from an interesting series I have found on digital storytelling, Douglas Eck looks at how technology is transforming art, but also notes the human influence on technology. Eck work at Google, on a project […]

Alchemy

For the last few weeks I’ve been watching a plan unfold, from the initial glimmering of an idea to glorious technicolour explosion. Moshie took our brief – to design an alchemy lab – and stunned us with her beautiful, detailed drawings. Niall worked his magic and turned these 2D drawings into a 360 degree VR lab. Kevin put together a Thinglink and populated it with the images and all of the submissions. Wendy did some H5P magic and lots of other stuff. […]

Game Story ; Week 10 Blog

I want to start this blog off by saying that last class in netnarr was so exciting and fun! Although only half of the class was present, that did not stop us from learning and playing games. We started the class by viewing a video where it teaches the watcher about three types of games which are, plan, practice, or improvised. We discussed about the differences between the three and also gave out examples for each one. Also, we got […]
