Inside the #NetNarr Alchemy Lab: An Open Invitation to Collaborate

A group of us who are in the Wide and Wild Open Community of Networked Narratives decided we want to put into practice the elements of those networks and narratives with a collaborative transmedia project. Transmedia concepts involve various forms of digital media, and digital platforms, connected together into one larger story thread. We’re calling this project “MediaJumpers”, and our tagline is “Every Object Tells a Story.” We’re using the concept of the magical “Alchemy Lab” as the setting for […]

On Selfies

My Daily Digital Alchemies: @netnarr #dda157 pic.twitter.com/sBcYNJqhh4 — Justin George (@Justinsightfuls) February 18, 2018 @netnarr #dda158 pic.twitter.com/sZZUIV0kXs — Justin George (@Justinsightfuls) February 18, 2018 On Selfies After doing some quick maths, I’ve concluded that the average number of selfies I have taken per year average around 3.5. Compare that to some people, where 3.5 is the daily average. No, it’s not necessarily either one of us that’s doing something wrong, but rather that both represent opposite ends of the spectrum […]

Reflections of Us

What the Professors did not know when they turned the whole world into a glass eye is what would reflect back. See, they made the eyes out of mirrored glass. Covered spires and lampposts, windows and concrete with tiny, shiny eyes–always watching, always showing. Without pupils or irises, they seem to follow you, act out your life in their little sclera screens for you. Beads of silver beneath moonlight–darkness the only safe place, now. Reflected back, we saw how small and easy we […]

Demystifying Doodles

I’ve been thinking a lot about creative processes recently – about how, if all one sees is the end product, it’s easy to assume that the creator produced it effortlessly. This morning, as I was doodling a happy birthday message for Susan, I was thinking about this again. Now, I don’t pretend that my doodles are works of creative genius, but I’ve picked up little tricks so that I can do them quickly, and not get bogged down in the […]

Video Annotation: Emilio Vavarella and the Art of the Digital

A Networked Narratives hangout last week with digital artist Emilio Vavarella provided some keen insights into how an artist might use digital tools and technology to make statements on the connected world. I popped the video of the interview into Vialogues so I could watch at my leisure and add comments/ questions/ observations as I went along. Emilio has done some pretty interesting art endeavors and museum installations, including: The Captcha Project, which critiqued the concept of human labor in […]

The Fragmented Me (Exploring Selfies in an UnSelfie World)

We’re exploring the art and act of Selfies in Networked Narratives, as Mia Zamora and Hannah Kelley are researching the impact of selfies and plan to curate a public art exhibit under the banner of #SelfieUnselfie in Norway. Both are on Fulbright Scholarships right now and focused on digital literacies (I think). Take a look/listen to their project and their invitation: True story: an hour after watching that video by Mia and Hannah and thinking about the idea of the […]

Slice of Life: A Meme Walks Into the Classroom

(This is for the Slice of Life challenge, hosted by Two Writing Teachers. We write on Tuesdays about the small moments in the larger perspective … or is that the larger perspective in the smaller moments? You write, too.) Most mornings, we have a Circle of Power and Respect in our sixth grade classroom. It’s a version of Morning Meeting, aimed more for older students. At this point in the year, I have my students lead all aspects of our morning. One […]

Eponymous Topic and the Internet

So, as you can see, this NetNarr blog is called The Wunderkammer.  You can also see that some of my work for the NetNarr class (like my DDAs and one of my entries into the Digital Art Referencium) has involved the same term and concept. <blockquote class=”twitter-tweet” data-lang=”en”><p lang=”en” dir=”ltr”><a href=”https://twitter.com/netnarr?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>@netnarr</a&gt; <a href=”https://twitter.com/hashtag/dda150?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>#dda150</a&gt; <a href=”https://twitter.com/hashtag/netnarr?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>#netnarr</a&gt; A raccoon skull (and other goodies) from my wunderkammer. <a href=”https://t.co/9V7MLi9ktw”>pic.twitter.com/9V7MLi9ktw</a></p>&mdash; Katherine Marzinsky (@KMarzinsky) <a href=”https://twitter.com/KMarzinsky/status/963217158917455878?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>February 13, 2018</a></blockquote> https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js The wunderkammer (wonder room), or cabinet […]

If You Like it, Then You Should Make a Meme of It!

I LOVE Beyonce! And I am even more excited that I get to use Beyonce in this blog post! This is actually one of my favorite memes. Now, I made this one but there is a picture of a meme in my class that says, "If you want a grade then you shoulda put your name on it." I actually have a bulletin board full of different meme sayings. I don't know why I didn't think of it before now. Okay, I […]

Memes and Selfies

I love that this class recognizes the importance of something as seemingly-silly as memes in the overall narrative that is digital culture in the 21st century. Memes are very important because, as I mentioned in class, they're a form of communication that we tend to take for granted. For example, I mentioned The Meme Bible, a gift I bought for my friends (10/10 recc, by the way, buy it immediately #notspon). When I looked through the activity book, I realized that […]
