Collaborative Art

One thing that continues to give me joy each year is the collaborative calendar that some of us contribute to. This year’s calendar was put together by Kevin, and it is a thing of beauty. You can download a copy and print it off if you like. My contribution is in memory of mum, who loved ducks. I took this on the way home from her funeral. “Mallard at Tebay” flickr photo by NomadWarMachine shared under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-SA) […]

Reflecting on Selfie-Reflecting~

Are you in your selfie? After this week’s discussion on selfies, that’s been the question I’ve been mulling over in my mind. And, to be honest, I’ve no answers–just more to wonder about. Reflections on Reflections I’ve already said much about selfies myself but I was interested to hear what my peers had to say about the emerging genre of digital art & creation. More, I was interested in what people thought of the idea of selfies being a form of communication. […]

The Fragmented Me (Exploring Selfies in an UnSelfie World)

We’re exploring the art and act of Selfies in Networked Narratives, as Mia Zamora and Hannah Kelley are researching the impact of selfies and plan to curate a public art exhibit under the banner of #SelfieUnselfie in Norway. Both are on Fulbright Scholarships right now and focused on digital literacies (I think). Take a look/listen to their project and their invitation: True story: an hour after watching that video by Mia and Hannah and thinking about the idea of the […]

Selfie-Reflecting~

(I’ve rocked a few regrettable interesting looks, huh???) Images are moments and if moments are experiences, then what experience does the “selfie” capture? What is the selfie? What does it represent? Society Says…. Well, that depends. When it comes to social perceptions, the selfie, like most new digital media, typically gets a bad rep. What did you think society would say??? According to one article in Jezebel, by Erin Gloria Ryan, “Selfies aren’t empowering; they’re a high tech reflection of the f*cked up way society […]

Degenerate Art 2.0~

Putting That Art History Minor To Task… New art always gets a bad rep. Whether it’s the Dada nonsense of Duchamp (i.e. his lovely Fountain) or the Neo-Dada digitized nonsense embodied in some works of ELit such as in Jason Nelson’s This is How You Will Die, there will be critics and they will be harsh. Digital art is the newest on the scene and so I believe that’s part of why there is so much skepticism surrounding it. Some people think it is […]

#NetNarr Photo Indoor Safari: Seven Photos in a Mad, Crazy Twitter Dash

The cool thing about taking photos is that you have to look at the world a bit different. It’s not just the device you see through, it’s the way your eye sees the world through the lens that sees the world. Yesterday, before the Networked Narratives Twitter Chat (which I forgot about until it had started), there was a NetNarr Safari activity, which involved taking seven photos over 15 minutes with different visual prompts coming in over Twitter. I arrived […]

#DDA75 | A (Short) Novel in One Photo

Hey Netnarr! Earlier this week for Digital Daily Assignment #75, you asked for participants to spend time with this moving photo by Aleppo – to then create a short story that includes what this man is listening to on his record player. We are to use words to give a sense of the sounds of his environment. Here is my short novel (in prose). — A Man Listens to Reconstruct these are still my walls. my broken walls. am i broken? i carry […]

“You must throw yourself in. There is no other way.”

“Then the Old Man of the Earth stooped over the floor of the cave, raised a huge stone from it, and left it leaning. It disclosed a great hole that went plumb-down.“That is the way,” he said. “But there are no stairs.” “You must throw yourself in.
