When Audio isn’t life

I am just a little behind of this blog post because of a chaotic and hectic couple weeks I’ve had recently but I finally am able to get this blog post. This week has been the beginning of a crazy ride in gaming as well as audio and audio editing. This week started off with the discussion on serious/empathy games. There was a lot to look at and understand about the pro’s and con’s of certain games. During class we […]

to quote a wise man: “@!#?@!”

Last week, we all went way back and explored some pretty ~retro~ games, ranging from the Oregon Trail to Sim City. Among these games, I chose to explore two of them - my first encounter was with Charlie the Duck, which I quickly learned was just a complete rip off of Mario. Not even just the concept - the whole level's layout was ripped from level 1 of the classic Mario game, but just replaced with different images & themes. […]

Playin’ Games (and making sounds)

I really enjoyed class this week, after all, who doesn't like playing games? I have a great deal of respect for people who analyze video games for their merits, as well as for the skills required to play them. Although the Internet Archive website was a cool idea, I had absolutely no luck playing the old games. As I've said before, I'm not a gamer (I have no patience and no attention span), so it was hard to figure out […]

DIGGER!??!?!

After trying multiple games to no avail, I looked again at the Software Library and miraculously found one of my FAVORITE early computer games, Digger! I did not see this the other day, if I had, I'd still be playing it right now...and maybe I am.I actually really enjoyed playing this game because it was familiar and I could figure out the controllers. When I say that I tried several games before this, I'm not kidding. I tried Tamagotchi, The […]

Week 10 – Exploring Games and Creative Ideas

This week was very interesting to me.  Students from Egypt are creating ideas for Game Ideas and we got a first look at some of their blogs about their games. The topics were not all about fun games though, some were more serious games to put out a message.  I looked at a student named Aly’s Drug Addiction game, which would be a more informative game.  Choosing different drugs at a different point through your virtual adolescence and young adult life will give […]

Throwing Those Games Together~

(Heads up: This post may not be as put-together as usual due to the holiday weekend and because I’ve been doing research for my thesis proposal >.<) What Makes a Game??? In class this week, we continued our discussions from last week about 1) games, specifically online/electronic games, and 2) audio and using it as a medium for storytelling. Both lines of inquiry still new to me and a little daunting tbh~ Anyway, to begin with, we watched a video […]

Arcady

The game I choose to play was Pac Man which is an Arcade game This game was published in 1983 Developer~Namco Limited Published by ~Atarisoft Genere ~ Action Theme ~ Arcade Pac-Man is the type of game that you have to practice to win. I was having a very hard time playing this game on my computer because I couldn’t maneuver as much as I could have if I was in a Arcade or playing it on a game console. […]

One Egg, One Space! -Tamagachi Experience

Once upon a time, I hatched an egg  . . .  With only 3 buttons !!!! Tamagachi was created by some very tech chic people if you ask me because 3 buttons and you basically had your own personal pet.  Collecting keychains to have different creatures, which were adorable, and absolutely necessary to all the kids in my class.  To see the computer form also take the exact same approach by having only three keys to work the different functions was also […]

Annie the Papergirl

In my Netnarr class, Professor Levine instructed the class to go to this website where it is filled with old video games. It was a bit troubling for me to find a video game that actually allowed me to play. After 5 tries, Paperboy 2 was the only working one and I am so glad it was. This game reminds me of the phone games we have in the palm of our hands today. It’s simple, your goal is to […]

On Gameplay Types & Elements

Recently I’ve been playing a favorite game of mine, Call of Duty 4, and attempting the last level, Mile High Club, on Veteran difficulty (“You will not survive”). The goal? Get through an airplane of terrorists on the hardest difficulty in less than 60 seconds. Knife the guy coming out of the bathroom on the left, get the two guys down the hallway in front, flashbang the other guys coming through the doorway, nothing too crazy. After about an […]

Are video games the problem?

Few things annoy me more than the "violent video games" argument, which has been volleyed back between Republicans and Democrats since the early 2000s. Although I do think that parents should moderate which games their children are playing, I don't think that running someone over in a car in Grand Theft Auto is a sign that a person is secretly a psychopath, and I certainly think that uninformed politicians should stop making it a talking point. It's hard to explain […]

yo tony, where’d u get that fresh pepperoni

phew! it's been a long week! and a pretty long checklist, too :P i kid, i kid!last tuesday was a bit of a technical mess, with our projector dying for good. but, the twitterchat still persisted, and i think we had a great conversation about empathy games - particularly SPENT, Bad News, and Syrian Journey. Our group played SPENT, which I also encountered last year in Networked Narratives. I remember doing infinitely better than I did this time around - […]
