turning back time

Reflecting on this year’s #Netnarr class, I realized that our journey was very different than last year’s in a number of ways. Even though we participated in connected learning, used most of the same tools, and even revisited familiar faces in our studio visits, they were two separate experiences. If I had to describe last year’s class, it would be more “creative”— and by creative, I mean there were more chances for imagination, interpretation, and remix. We had opportunities to […]

And It’s a Wrap!

The end of the semester has finally arrived and it has been a long but insightful ride. This class was initially an elective that I took just because it was one of the only classes available. I was a little skeptical about it at first but I am so glad that I stuck it out the whole semester. I learned so many things and became much more tech savvy then I would have been had I not taken this class. […]

Close Reading Of E-Lit Text

When exploring through all the examples of E-Lit that was provided, I fell upon one that I really found interesting, which was the Soliloquy. The soliloquy is about Kenneth Goldsmith writing about everything he spoke about for one whole week. He recorded everything and had to transcribe it into an online literature. This text is broken down into what he said the whole seven days of the week. When you click on each day of the week, it is then […]

It’s Been Real (Or Has It…???) ^.^~

(Just kidding This simulation’s graphic’s are super real >.<) So, it’s the end of another semester spent traversing the weird, wild web, huh? Time definitely flew by this semester! It feels like just yesterday we were talking about the terrors of online data tracking… or maybe I’m just having flashbacks of Zuckerberg testifying before Congress >.> Anyway… This semester was definitely wild. I can honestly say I was not expecting to do as much work as I managed to pull off this semester. Check […]

Hopeful Monster: Exploring an ELit Frankenstein of Hypertext & Kinetic Poetry~

This week, we’ve finally begun our much-anticipated exploration of Elit. (Perhaps, it’s only much-anticipated on my end though…?) Delving into Elit As I may have mentioned before, I’ve taken a few courses already on ELiterature and networked narratives. And so, I’ve already developed a bit of a soft spot for the genre. I find the experimentation and spontaneity and interactivity of Elit to be engaging in a way that is not better than traditional literature but that allows for more of my […]

bots the matter with you?

breaking! this past week, it has been reported that yes, bots were on the rise again on twitter... except they weren't russian bots - this was the work of kean students!and i'll be the first to admit that i think everyone did a great job with living double lives in their own twitter as both a tired, politically distraught student and a persistent, politically distraught bot! the purpose of the bots were to create conversation, but to ask the questions […]

Bot-ulism

Last week in class we ventured into the world of bots.  We started by looking at some exemplary bots, from the famous experiment ELIZA to the works of poetry-generating bots.  We concluded with an exercise where we created our own Twitter bots to tweet about a given topic.  I found the topic of bots both fascinating and challenging, even a little nostalgia-inducing. I’ve had a soft spot for robots and artificial intelligence ever since I saw a documentary about real-life […]

Bot Life for life

Well this week was definitely an interesting but odd week all together. I learned that you can create a bot that can send out tweets or information in general for you without me having to type it up myself. I learned that bots are basically a whole different entity that sends out its own information. All I had to do was set it up and it did everything on it’s own. I find it really weird because it acts like […]

Bots & Whatnot~

Beep-Beep-Boo-Bot: Revisiting Bots So, at this point in my exploration of the digital humanities, I’m not unfamiliar with bots. In fact, I’ve written about them at length before. More, I’ve written about the ethics or lack thereof of bots here. This isn’t to say that I’ve, by any means, said all there is to say about bots, just that I have thought about them and their functions in detail before. And, more, as far as interacting with and creating bots, […]

Audio Audio Audio and Some Redlining too

This week’s class and activity was definitely something different but interesting all the same. We discussed redlining, which deals with different companies discriminating and denying services to people of certain geographical areas. I find that something to be very unfair because everyone should have access to the same types of services regardless of where they live. When doing my make bank based on transportation, I realized that the low income area I focused on how multiple ways for transportation and I […]

redlining & remixing

this past week, during our exploration of games, we've focused a lot on the concept of remixing, which is an important element to recognize in such a unique class as this. a few weeks ago, we put questions into the padlet we shared with Maha's students in Egypt; unfortunately, we didn't receive responses, but that didn't stop us! instead, we created the supposed answers to those questions, and put them together to form a mock / imaginary interview, speculating on […]

Red-Onlining

In class last week we learned about the concept of digital redlining (see Dr. Chris Gilliard’s work on the topic), and we were asked to create an interactive map of Newark that compared its historical redlining zones and something tech-related.  I chose to compare the redlining zones with free Wi-fi points, and my interactive map can be found here. It was hard to draw any meaningful conclusions from my map comparison because it seems there aren’t many free Wi-Fi points […]

Divided by Redline

The person that I had the questions for didn’t respond but my audio will be recorded down below.  Clean water game This week we learned about Redlining.. Redlining is the practice of denying services, either directly or through selectively raising prices, to residents of certain areas based on the racial or ethnic composition of those areas. What I choose to observe through my redlining observation was the phone company that has cell towers available in my area . It really puzzles […]

Getting Lost In Gaming

It’s been a hectic few weeks for me and playing catch up is stressful but I’m almost there. This week I wasn’t able to make it to class because I had some personal things that came up. So when it comes down to the discussion of game play types and the elements of games I am a little on the confused. But from trying to understand the post of this week 10 weekly break down for what was done in […]
