hello from the dystopian present

Alright. Remember last week when I said that I’d get everything together for this week? Haaaa oops. Also ha ha ha don’t you just Love when you fall asleep writing a post and wake up past its deadline? Haaaa yeah. So! We’ll kinda breeze through what we gotta do this week. This chickadee wants to snooze. DDK & DNT The first two activities that we have to do for this week are very Me-centered. The Data Detox Kit wants you […]

Responding to: ‘The good, the bad and the ugly sides of data tracking’

URL to article: https://internethealthreport.org/2018/the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly-sides-of-data-tracking/ According to the article ‘The good, the bad, and the ugly side of data tracking‘ by Internet Health Report,  data tracking is more common than we think it is nowadays. And the worst part of it, is that it is happening to us almost every time we go online with our electronic devices that have connection to the internet. This includes laptops and smart phone. Upon reading this article, I couldn’t help but to be remind […]

Field Guide 0.0

I’m not 100% sure how I’m gonna go about even figuring out how I wanna contribute to this field guide project for the end of the semester. I think I’ll be needing a bit more explanation and discussion of the project in general before I start planning things, y’know? Sounds reasonable, I think. Can’t say the same for my thesis. Time’s a’tickin. Buuuuuuuut I’ll figure it out. Always do. Anyway, I’m also a little fuzzy about these additional posts we have […]

In the Algorithm We Trust (But Should We????)

Welcome back to hell~ This week, we dove deeper into the darkness of the web and the practices of those who use the web as a tool for mass surveillance. Topics in this week’s discussion include 1) data tracking, 2) digital redlining, and 3) surveillance capitalism. Light stuff, I know. Anyway, I suggest you grab a drink of your choice and strap in for my *hot take* on some of these issues~ Data Tracking, Digital Redlining, & Surveillance Capitalism Oh My! […]

How I see the world

The studio visit with Chris Gilliard was very interesting. I’m that person that doesn’t really care about technology and what’s going on in the world. I have always know that we are being watched and someone was tracking us. Now that I know that we are being tracked by machines, what are the machines doing with the information? The problem I have is the fact that we as American knew that this was going on but we didn’t do anything […]

Field Guide-Illuminating the Darkness one nightlight at a time!

In Network Narratives, our class discussions and work is being culminated into a Field Guide at the end of the semester. This is a guide to navigating our way through the darkness and into the light of this digital age we are in, and continuing to learn about. My passion for the work I plan to contribute may grow and evolve, but at this stage, my primary concern is preparing my students for the world they are inheriting. I want them […]

Deep web vs Dark Web Journey

https://brightplanet.com/2014/03/clearing-confusion-deep-web-vs-dark-web/ https://brightplanet.com/2014/03/clearing-confusion-deep-web-vs-dark-web/Reading this article was so helpful. Learning the difference between deep web and dark web is something I think everyone should know. I personally didn’t realize that there was a difference, but now I know. In this article, I give it a 4 because this will take a lot of time to get across to people. Many people are so stuck in their ways that they are barely open to change ,but this is something that everyone should take […]

Surviving Darkness the Journey

https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/the-new-lesson-plan-for-elementary-school-surviving-the-internet/2018/04/06/8b4a8202-0417-494b-a72b-792221e08e3b_story.html?utm_term=.20901abe3ffe This article really caught my attention because I work in the Newark school system and see so many students consumed with technology at such a young age. Students no longer want to pick up a book or learn to write their names because all they want to do is play on YouTube. What happened to jump rope and tag? Technology has taken over that these parents no longer communicate with their children, but rather just hand off the cell […]

Tracking Journey

After viewing my Twitter activity, it makes me notice that I’m not a fan of Twitter. Years ago I was very big on Twitter, but now it just really doesn’t hold my attention. I try to come on here as much as possible, but it’s harder than I expected. I’m barely on my normal sites Instagram and Facebook because I have so much going on. In the future, I will try to tweet a little more. This is a bit […]

I’m Unique…Like Everyone Else

If anything, delving into online data tracking has made it readily apparent just how much of our information is, well, readily apparent. Just about every application you could conceive of using is tracking you to some extent. Don’t believe me? Sounds far-fetched? Well, there are plenty of sites you can explore that will break down for you how different forms of online data tracking work. This week, were provided a list of different sites in the class blog post that let […]

I Actually Really Do Feel like Someone is Always Watching Me…👀

I'm not sure how many people remember this Geico commercial where the stack of money was always looking at someone, and then the music would start to play. "I always feel like somebody's watching meeeeeeee and I have no privacy. Woah Oh Oh." I would use to laugh every time I saw this commercial because … Continue reading I Actually Really Do Feel like Someone is Always Watching Me… →

Trying out PANOPTICLICK (tracking tool)

This site argues that it will will analyze how your browser and add-ons protect you against online tracking technologies. It also analyses if your system is properly configured. In order to continue with the service of the website, you will need to consent, through the ‘TEST ME’ button. After this, you can see the results of how your browser is operating. All in all, I can say it is quite easy to use, fast, and there is no need […]
