On Beauty Patrol

The musical slideshow is a time honored form of digital storytelling. I go out birding three or four times a week at our local Delta Ponds. My little slideshows and videos are day journal entries–this is what I did, this is what I saw, this was the season, the weather, the birds on the water, and what’s flowering now. Above: After a fair beginning in sunshine, my walk dissolved into snow, hail, and rain with still a mile back home. I […]

Hey! You! Scrambled Eggs for Brains!

So the good folks at #netnarr seem to think some of you poor bastids out there get brainblitzed by media overload. Seems unlikely to me. You’re all adults–I’m thinking you have some degree of self-awareness? Nothing I really have to say is going to mean zippity-do-dah to you, but hey! Write this list on a roll of toilet paper and send it to your mother.SANDY’S CIDER HOUSE RULES FOR INTERNET SANITY1. Don’t be one of those peeps who walk around with […]

They won’t tell me the exact timing of this terrible event but they do tell me that we alchemists have the power to change this. […]

Journey to a Far Age

After I put Mom on the train to send her back to her home in Beaverton, OR, I felt dazed, jet-lagged. I felt like I had traveled to a far country for a week and was having to stage my re-entry, so I wouldn’t fall into a narcosis of the deep. That far country was a week at the Oregon Coast with my Mickey/Mom celebrating her 91st birthday with high surf and a terrific coastal storm. Mickey is fine–she’s alert, curious, and […]

“You must throw yourself in. There is no other way.”

“Then the Old Man of the Earth stooped over the floor of the cave, raised a huge stone from it, and left it leaning. It disclosed a great hole that went plumb-down.“That is the way,” he said. “But there are no stairs.” “You must throw yourself in. There is no other way.”― George MacDonald, The Golden Key and Other StoriesWeek Three of the Network Narratives class–now that I’ve thrown myself in, time to reflect on the free fall of the […]

A talented cook bakes a cake made of stars. A professor of English literature is looking for an enormous turtle in a Sicilian garden. A party of bears are on a secret mission. Their aim is to find the lost king of Sri Lanka. An astronomer finds a golden angel in Miami. A lily causes anyone who smells it to believe they are a firefly. A software developer possesses a unique skill: She can sense the presence of mermaids. A […]

Where Warriors Fall Out of the Sky

NOTE: This story is based on a Five Card Flickr draw of five random images. The challenge is to combine all five images into one story. Where Warriors Fall Out of the SkyOnce upon a time I lived alone in the midst of unpeopled landscape and that was my fault. I hadn’t been able to save them. Every day I went in search of those who had passed this way before me and those I had loved. My parents and husband, […]

Dr. Flores! My Head is Exploding!

What the heck just hit me?I got a nice nag from Alan Levine like maybe I could show up for the first ever Studio Tour (whazzat?) for the Network Narratives class out of Kean University I’m taking as an Open Participant. Gotta grade, so yeah, anything is better than that.Wander to computer. Turn on, jack in, fall out of chair an hour later with flowers exploding out the top of my curly brown head. This was a Google hangout with students […]
